hi, a couple of days ago I changed my default engine to Duck from Google, because I was sick of receiving pop-up ads based on my web searches. But I am still receiving such ads. Have I missed something here? I use Firefox browser on a MacBook.

If you have foxfire refresh it. Go to their sup[port sections and type in refresh and then go thru all of the foxfire settings. As for Google make sure you check all of yr privacy settings. And double check yr addons in both foxfire and google

Most likely you have a addon of some sort or another in you browser or one of the many browser search bars that are doing it. Uninstall them and the problem will go away. Anything that says Google is bad so use that as a basis for your search.
