There is a 9 volt battery shipped with the BarxBuddy, but it isn't connected. I thought the same thing until I opened the battery compartment, removed the seal and connected it. You should be able to open the battery compartment by pressing down on the arrow and sliding it. I did find it a little difficult at first.
