When I bought cheap kitchen gadgets and they were useless, I figured that's the story with cheap kitchen gadgets. When I bought shirts that were one size smaller than the label indicated, I figured the site didn't necessarily know that.

But last night, at 9:46 when I bought an HP 8000 computer, I thought I must have "bounced" the button when entering the code for a $10 VIP Gift discount. The page that came back said they couldn't take two codes on one purchase. The confirmation email, at 9:48, though, said they hadn't credited it even once.

I immediately (9:50) notified them of the site malfunction, and at 4:46 AM they wrote back closing the issue without doing anything. I wrote back to cancel the order, and they said that because it was over 2 hours, I could not cancel.

Haven't a lot of experience there, but what I have had was trouble-free

  • Walmart

I ordered a case of facial tissue, and the confoirmation I received from Walmart.com agreed. When I got the tissues arrived, there was only ONE box of tissues, not a case, and it had come from Tiger Direct. The two stores each blamed each other, and it was only after I made a nuisance of myself on Twitter that someone mailed me a refund.

Since then, I've been VERY careful to make sure I'm dealing with Walmart. "Ship-to-site" sounds wonderful, but I end up spending 2-4 hours trying to pick up merchandise when I do that. From now on, they can ship it to me.

Some of their prices are MUCH lower on the site and some are much HIGHER. I used to love Walmart when Sam was alive, but I'm no longer very happy with them.

  • Amazon

When you figure the time and money required to shop in person, prices at Amazon are EXTREMELY competitive, but what cinches the deal is their customer service.
When I ordered disposable bakeware, they shipped a package of 2 instead of 4 packages of 2. When I asked for the rest, they sent me a full refund. When I ordered 20 pounds of Basmati rice at an exceptional price, and got 10 pounds, they gave me a choice of getting a second 10-pound bag, or a 50% refund.
Anybody can make a mistake, including Amazon, but Amazon is quick to make it right, no quibbling, often giving the customer more than he asked for. I wish Amazon were running for President!

I used to buy from TigerDirect before the internet was around. They would advertise in Computer Shopper.
I had to read their ads VERY carefully. They sometimes had "gotcha" merchandise, but they never lied about the merchandise, delivering promptly and packing carefully.
In recent years, they seem to have continued to sell the same strange merchandise, but their financial and shipping practices are no longer satisfactory. Too bad. Some of their strange merchandise turned out to be grteat bargains, asnd I miss the treasure hunt.
