  • ModCloth

I've ordered three dresses from Modcloth. All were surprisingly low quality for the price I paid. Cheap fabric, buttons falling off, hanging threads all over. Cheap quality dresses never look as nice on you as they do in the promo picture.

Sizing is also hit or miss with Modcloth. One dress was marked 'runs small' so I ordered up a size and it was still too small. Another said it runs true to size, but I could barely squeeze into it.

ModCloth is tempting, but not worth it!

I ordered a corset for a Halloween Costume from AMIclubwear. I was told the item would be shipped within 2 business days. After 2 business days had passed and the item had not shipped, I opened a support ticket. Support tickets are also supposed to be answered within two business days. No response and no shipment after 3 more days, I file another ticket and a Better Business Bureau complaint.
I tried calling the customer support during business hours but no one picked up and the voicemail box was full.

Finally after 8 business days (1 1/2 weeks), they shipped my order. By then it was too late and I had already ordered the same item from another site for my Halloween costume.

AMIclubwear is not a reputable site. Stay away.

  • eBay

10/28/15

I've sold around 100 items on ebay and bought a fair number too.

Good: As a marketplace, Ebay still seems to be the best place to buy and sell unusual items, or find mainstream items at a discount if you don't care where it comes from. There is substantial buyer demand for the right items and eBay is not dead in any sense.

Bad: As a seller, Ebay's site is very buggy. This is endlessly frustrating. Listing items is frequently met with bugs in the listing page. And Ebay doesn't care. The site is dated and difficult to navigate.
Seller fees are not outrageous but they are quite high (10%).

Customer service is also poor and is known to side with the buyer.

The ratings system is better than it used to be, but a corrupt seller can still have your negative feedback removed even if it was perfectly valid.

If I could find a better platform to sell my items, I would gladly leave eBay.

  • SparkPeople

10/28/15

SparkPeople's mission is to help you become a healthier and (if you wish) lighter person, for free. It has more content and community than you could ever need. It's a very balanced site which uses tried and true nutrition and fitness improvements to get you on track.

Meal tracking. Exercise tracking. Medical stats. Auto-syncing. Daily goals. Meal plans. Monthly challenges. Cheesy but effective reinforcement system. A community which cheers each other on. SparkPeople's got it.

Endless articles teach you how to cook, exercise, manage illness, and balance life, and the information on the site tends to be quite well scientifically supported and actionable. Then there are some cool features like when you select a weight loss goal, it will automatically adjust your daily recommended calories and weekly exercise minutes to help you achieve that goal.

I've never bought anything from the site, and I actually won two free exercise DVDs. Although sparkpeople does sell some goods and services, it's not overly pushy or annoying, especially if you have an ad blocker installed.

  • Yerdle

Yerdle is like an online garage sale. You trade your unwanted items online for "Yerdle Dollars", which you use to purchase other items.

When you "sell" an item, shipping is free, but the seller pays for shipping supplies.
When you purchase an item, you pay "Yerdle Dollars" for it in addition to real money on shipping ($5 flat fee) and a service fee ($2-3 per item). So total cost in real money per item is at least $7 or slightly less if you buy multiple items from the same seller.

Yerdle prints money by giving Yerdle Dollars as a reward to users who have "sold" a certain number of items, and as a result the currency value of Yerdle Dollars has become noticably inflated over USD.

Personally, I list only items on Yerdle that I really want to give away, and I use recycled shipping supplies only so I don't pay out of pocket. I don't often buy on Yerdle. I think $7 per item is steep considering the item quality available (think garage sale). And how much of that money does the seller receive? $0. The value proposition for purchasing items on Yerdle has become dubious after the introduction of service fees. I predict that unless they can decrease service fees, Yerdle will eventually die as the business model just doesn't add up.

Wow, on top of all this, Yerdle will stoop to writing fake reviews on this site.
Prior to 3/9/16, Yerdle's average rating on Sitejabber was 2.0 with 8 reviews.

EIGHT more 5 star reviews were posted on 3/9/2016. ALL of these reviewers have written only 1 review. Clearly these reviews are fake, probably written by Yerdle employees. I also noticed that someone "claimed" Yerdle on Sitejabber.com. Most likely, someone from Yerdle found this page on 3/9/16, claimed it, and wrote a bunch of fake reviews.

Tip for consumers:
Pay attention to how much real money you spend vs. what the item is actually worth.

  • PaperBackSwap

10/28/15

I gave away five books and I paid for their shipping. I was promised I could receive five books for free in return.

After one year, the swap credits EXPIRE. So I paid out of pocket to give away my books and received nothing in return. Apparently Paperbackswap thinks this is okay.

Tip for consumers:
Site owners think it's okay to steal your book swap credits.
