I joined nextdoor during the COVID thing to find out where other were finding cleaning and paper products, which supermarkets were well-stocked, various issues popping up in the community, how people were handling them. Needed help clearing brush from my yard, etc. All to the good! BUT certain people suddenly seemed to storm NextDoor calling certain other people "Karens" - a nasty slur based on ethnicity, gender, and age (which you cannot level at any other demographic on the planet, except the male counterpart to a "Karen." After a man from a certain demographic, defended riding bikes 30mph on a 5-foot wide path, where kids and older people are walking, and he posted: "There's sure a lot of Karen up in here" after people had expressed concerned about the cyclists tearing down the pedestrian pathway, I posted the following, which led to being reported and my account shut down with no due process.
I said: "Just say I'm a birder. I enjoy strolling along with my binoculars looking at nature. The guys who ride their bikes on the path yelling are making people jump out of the way, and also scaring off birds and wildlife. Am I a 'Karen' for complaining about birds getting scared away due to some people breaking the rules and exhibiting bad behavior? Or is it the people who are flouting the rules who are the 'Karens'? It can't be both. People need to make up their minds. Because otherwise, using the term 'Karen" is deliberately meant as a slam against a person solely because she's a middle-aged upper middle class white women. Not what she says or does. But who she is--and tarring everyone from that demographic with the same negative characteristics and stereotypes. Is it really ok to level an insult aimed at a particular demographic, no matter what they do or say? Is that really progressive or compassionate or righteous?"
That's precisely what I wrote. NextDoor shut down my account due to violation of community standards--hate speech and racism. Like at least 50% of people on NextDoor I used my name and last initial. They also cited me for not using my full name. With what is going on today. With people's livelihoods, housing, total reputations being slammed and lives ruined if they step out of line by saying something others determine is "hateful" - who in their right minds are going to post their full names on NextDoor? I said nothing hateful or racist and yet my account was closed with no inquiry, and not knowing who "reported" me. Why would I want anyone the power to come after me in real life with unfounded accusations that also would not be subject to and kind of review or due process...? This is very, very, very dangerous.
