The "prescreened" contractor for a major rehab job took my initial deposit money and disappeared. I'm now out on $15k. DO NOT USE THIS SITE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE

Also nice touch that there is a bot that writes the same messages asking you to email them on the responses. I did that before writing the review but got no responses. These bastards are probably laughing their heads off on some carribean island making a killing selling your info to shady contractors.

Of course with these site you get hit on high prices and fees, but the market is the market. Whenever I check both stubhub and ticketliquidator, and if they both ticketliquidator has lower fees by usually around $10 a ticket. I guess that extra $10 of your money on stubhub goes to all the ubiquitous ads you see everywhere. I've order tickets from this site several times and never had a problem.

  • Priceline

I see a lot of bad reviews knocking this site, but i've gotten some just absolutely amazing deals on hotels from Priceline. Actually I usually book my hotels on priceline using name your own price functions because I'm not very picky about hotels. I've gotten $400 hotels in manhattan for $200, at places like the Sofitel and Millenium Hilton, but I think the sweetest deal I've ever gotten was a suite in Denver for $29!

I can understand the frustration regarding this site. A few years ago I was traveling to Miami Beach, and I didn't notice that the zone they drew extended up really far away from my target neighborhood. I tried to cancel the hotel but pretty much all the customer service people there are just trained to be jerks and say no to everything.

However with a little savvy, you can save yourself the trouble of having to deal with their horrible customer service and get some really good deals.

Here's what I do - and this is VERY important
1. Check for the LOWEST price the hotels with the star rating you are looking for in the zone you want to stay in
2. Put in a bid around 50-60% of the original price
3. Resubmit at a higher price if you don't get it.

In my experience I usually got a room or some sort of higher counter offer on the first try. Remember it still all depends on the supply and demand. You can usually figure out what hotel you are most likely to get before you bid - its usually among the 3 of the lower tier of that star range, although I've gotten really lucky at times. If those hotels in that star level don't do if for you, then just look at the next level. I would stick with a least a 3 star on priceline to avoid lemons. Also I never bid for more than 75% of the original price - I would rather just book it the normal way.

Note that this only works well in cities where priceline has a large inventory of hotels to choose from.

Indispensable tool when you are traveling to get the best prices for plane tickets. Although it doesn't carry every airline, like regional stuff in south america, it does a pretty good job for US travels. I always use the search then link directly to the airline's own website. I've never seen a better price displayed on Travelocity or any of the other travel sites, and they always charge a commission and make cancellations are complete nightmare.

Great idea, poor execution. Basically a kayak.com for tickets in the secondary market. Unfortunately it doesn't really work - I tried to search for Book of Morman tickets and the search engine only showed 3 dates for the next month, whereas a quick check with stubhub shows there are secondary markets for all dates.

The best app out there for your iphone or android in my opinion. Basically it allows you to tether your computer to your phone and use your phone's internet access. Not sure why people would actually use a usb wireless unit when most likely they are already paying for internet on their phone.

  • RottenTomatoes

6/18/11

I'm a bit of a movie snob, and time is scarce for me these days. That's why I always check out rottentomatoes before I commit 2 hours of my brain cycles to watching a movie. Typically I find the reviews to be right on - I now rarely watch movies rated under 75%. However, I do find the critics tend to give not so good artsy films higher ratings than they deserve. That can be double checked with the fan ratings. Its usually suspect when there is a huge discrepancy.

Overall, this site is very well designed and gives access to the info that I'm looking for very quickly.

Awesome free site to stay organized. It features a very clean interface. Best thing is that it has excellent apps on iphones and android so I can quickly write notes to myself that can be accessed later on my desktop.

  • Grubhub

6/5/11

I've already posted this in the seamlessweb review, but reposting it here since its a comparison on grubhub and seamless web

It's 3pm on a Sunday, and this is the number of restaurants I found available to delivery to my address in hells kitchen at this moment
Seamlessweb: 280
Grubhub: 261
--advantage: Seamlessweb

Grubhub's design looks prettier, but I feel like seamlessweb's UI is much more useful.
I'm very big on reviews (obviously so are you if you are reading this.) Seamless web allows me to sort by stars and see how many reviews the restaurant has, a feature Brubhub does not have.
Grubhub does has yelp reviews as well as its own reviews, but what's the point if it doesn't link to yelp when you click on it?

Also when I go to the menu, the smaller font on seamless web makes me feel like I'm looking at a real menu, which is good.
Grubhub has the menu on the right bar with other restaurants still listed on the left bar. Why would you have take up valuable screen real estate when I've already chosen a restaurant? Also, because of the huge font, you have to scroll twice as many screens to see the whole menu, which is quite annoying.

Another advantage Seamlessweb has over grubhub is the most 'liked' and most 'popular' item boxes on the right, which is very useful when you are exploring new places to order from. I wish yelp would actually have a menu and the same kind of feature so i know what dishes to order when I eat in at a new restaurant!

Overall, seamless web the better site to order delivery from. There's a reason why all big banks use seamless web to feed their overworked excel monkeys!

  • Netflix

6/5/11

I was a netflix subscriber for a number of years. I've always liked the service over having to go to blockbuster. However, I recently canceled because there are just better technology out now that it's for me its no longer worth the $15 a month.

I can get pretty much all the new releases on my FIOS. Yes they are $4.99 or $5.99 each, but they come out earlier and I rarely find more than 3 movies I'd want to watch a month anyways. I'm also impatient and got tired of waiting up to 3-5 days to get my dvds. When I'm in the mood for a movie, I want to see it right now!

Also, since losing their deal with Starz the streaming content has not been very good. The value in netflix I suppose is the "long tail" movies - indie movies that you won't really find anywhere else. I suppose if you are a movie junkie or don't have cable, it may still be worth it.

  • Quora

6/5/11

Quora is an amazing resource that fills the information gap that is not provided sites like wikipedia. If you want informed opinions, know-how, and sage advice, this is the place to go. The value is in the users - want to ask details on a hot new startup? Very good chance the CEO/CFO will answer it. Questions about the Mavs? Ask Mark Cuban. I really hope they can keep the quality high as the site gains in popularity.

  • TechCrunch

6/5/11

Obsessively updated site on everything in the tech world. Great commentary and resource. I love reading Techcrunch to check the pulse on what is going on in the tech world and what cool new services are available that may not have hit the mainstream yet.

  • Amazon

6/5/11

I've been a customer for over 10 years. And I've never had a bad experience. This is simply the best site to buy anything they are selling. The prices are very good, not always the best. You might get better deals on other sites, but its much more convenient to not have to create new accounts with other vendors, enter my credit card info, and possibly get sketchy service. I can look up what I am looking to purchase, read reviews to make sure I'm getting the best in class product, click and buy. Easy. Best of all it is at my door in 2 days (sometimes one) with Prime. No joke - I would say 90% of my discretionary spending is on amazon, from my TV and coffee maker to my underwear and socks. Also the customer service and return policy is great. My only gripe is that since I moved to New York I now have to pay sales tax.

  • TurningArt

6/5/11

At first I was really excited about turningart - netflix for art? Great idea! Getting good artwork is generally a serious investment, and it would be nice to "rent" art to see how much you like it.

My main problem with this site is that it does not provide clearly what exactly it was offering. What they don't offer is:
1) The "real art." This was expected since some of the pieces are priced at thousands of dollars, but this was not explicit on the site. I had to ask them on their facebook page exactly what I was getting, and they answered "a high quality print."

2) "a high quality print" - basically what ended up coming in the mail was a 12x14 POSTER with a 17X21 frame. Again, the size was also not given explicitly in the site, and I was NOT expecting something in a size more appropriate for my bathroom than my living room. Also, I was expecting at least something printed on canvas.

What made me upset was the lack of disclosure anywhere on their site on what you are getting. This whole thing is just such a disappointment and I feel a bit cheated. Who would pay $10 a month to rent a poster that probably costs $5 to print? I'm cancelling my service asap.

<update> so I was looking to cancel my subscription, but can't find the form to do so. I did find the info about what I was getting (small 12x14 print) on the FAQ section - I'm not sure why this info was not up front and center. Also found out that it was a $75 fee if you mess up the print. Great. Do yourself a favor and go and barnes and noble, buy a big book on art, tear the picture out and put it in a frame yourself.
