I did not even know about Bikes Direct until I went to several shops looking for a 29er. After some discussion at the last shop I went to about which specs I could get in my budget, the salesman said 'maybe you should try bikesdirect'. I did not think too much about it until I got home; then I went on-line and searched on-line bike sellers.
I was really surprised how much less on-line shops were than bike shops in my area. And Bikes Direct had really great looking bikes at very low prices. This made me a bit nervous; however I did find a lot of indication they were for real by surfing the net. I was really encouraged by their A+ BBB rating: http://www.bbb.org/dallas/business-reviews/bicycle-dealers/bikesdirectcom-in-dallas-tx-*******
So I ordered a Motobecane Fantom 29 Pro SL for just under $1000. This bike has a Rock Shox Reba and Shimano XTR, the type of spec you would see for over $2000 or even more in a bike shop. Less than 24 hours after I order it I got an e-mail saying it was on the way. Four days later UPS delivered the boxed bike to my door. It took me a bit under an hour to unbox and setup the bike.
That was three months ago and every time I see the bike I smile; so I figure it is time to post my experience. I could not be happier with Bikes Direct. I saved hundreds of dollars, I got a bike that is in my opinion nicer than any I saw in a shop.
I might add that the Fantom 29er is stiff and climbs like a goat; but it still comfortable due to the big wheels & tires. XTR shifting is a dream and the Reba is excellent. I just love this bike.
Bikes Direct is worth a look for anyone who would like to get a super bike at a low price.
