“UPromise is good”

Ben B.
11/15/19

As far as I can tell UPromise is pretty solid really. I read some of these posts and I just didn't understand the negativity? I have a linked 529 account and it has worked well I think. I will say they did cut what they were rewarding in 18, but these companies got to do something to stay profitable I guess? I really don't have too much negative, it does take a while to get money posted to account and sometimes I wonder if there is a catch later down the road? But right now seems good.

“They suddenly deactivated my account without any justification”

Dominik B.
12/28/23

They suddenly deactivated my account without any justification after I had earned a considerable amount of money in rewards. They were audacious to the point that they deactivated my account RIGHT BEFORE the due date for the transfer to be made. No response from their customer support either. This website/company is a scam and there should be a class action initiated against it, so it can no longer rid people of their time and potential cash opportunities which could otherwise be realized elsewhere. BEWARE!

To be clear, there are things that Promise does well and there things the site does poorly. It_should_ enable the user to earn rewards from various activities (shopping, applying for credit cards, opening accounts) and when a $50 total is reached, transfer that out to a 529.

In practice, the rewards aren't always recorded correctly. We applied through the Upromise website for a UPromise credit card. The site transferred me to Barclays bank's site to finish setting up the card. Guess what,Upromise still prompts me to apply for the card and no reward has been given for having done so. That's piss-poor technology and there's not a way to contact someone to rectify the issue.

From this experience I don't have high hopes that the rest of my transactions will be recognized. That's disappointing because the potential for this site is very good. But I suppose I should be wary of getting something for nothing.

Tip for consumers:
To get anything out of it you need to commit to earning at least $50 worth of rewards which may require, at 1%, $5000 of relevant purchases.

I was a delighted user of UPromise over twenty years. It was once a tight, sharp, relevant program. More recently, I still received cashback payments on time and began trying out their survey dashboard, where you could accumulate more funds at small scale, a dollar or fifty cents at a time. Fun if a little tedious.

One day I typed in my age for the survey screening and for some reason the digits reverted, so that as I pressed enter, the field said '1' instead of my age. A simple typo, could have gotten a warning to correct, but instead I was immediately suspended because "my data does not match my profile." From then on, I had to go through a humiliating identity recognition process involving state of the art AI camera techniques from my phone and a host of other dumbass things so I could retrieve access to an account I have used for 20 years. Even the so-called customer service rep I was "talking" to was AI. There were no human beings involved.

I gave up, and my account is closed. Luckily I only lost $10 because the account sweeps to my own savings account instead of a 529 tied to them. Good riddance.

Where to begin...UPromise is aptly named. You promise to follow the rules, purchase through their website, upload receipts, encourage family to contribute, link a 529 because who doesn't want to be a good parent and contribute to their kids college fund right? What we as customer expect in return is that they in turn will keep their promises to pay what they falsely advertise, care about our time and effort, invest in their reputation, and be a basic ethical company...FALSE! Linked a 529 and it took them 3 months to figure out their mistake before I finally got my money back. I have invested weeks of my time (8 hour shifts) correcting their mistakes. Their app NEVER works, they offer zero customer service, zero tech support, they fail to keep promises, you can't talk to anyone, and they put you through olympic hurdle tryouts just to get pennies...but it's the point behind it. If you put in writing that you will give $4 for 2 Garnier plus $2 for a star purchase than do it! If you make a mistake do it the first time I ask, don't make it impossible to send pics of proof, don't ignore me making me submit 6 tickets, and then have the nerve to say the receipt wasn't read right by your vendor so according to terms and conditions you're under no obligation to fulfill your promise! We learn before we are 5 to keep our word! You claim to be pro-family but you're just a scam. Shame on you!

We started a Upromise account when my oldest was around 2. He is 19 now. Many family members joined and directed their earnings to my Son who is now 19. He started College this Fall and I wanted to see what 17 years of using the program would provide. They simply said they could not find my account. Thats IT! Sorry Dude, the 17 years you and your Family made contributions and interest just went Poof. No Account, no help. It would make a really interesting 60 Minute investigation though. Hmmm?

They took my money. I had an account and they say they have no record of it. Because of that, I have no access to that money as they claim it doesn't exist.

They have deactivated my account twice. No reasons concerned as signing up gained a lot of info. Its looking more like a fraudulent company.

Seems they will just deactivate and fight you on every dime/purchases you made that they will not honor.

Horrible experience. Purchased close to $1000 though Upromise in December through multiple stores. Only one cash back was paid. Had to spend much time emailing and sending proof of purchase receipts. Still no cash back. This is not the first time I've had to do this with them. There are too many other cash back sites that payout in a reliable manner. This company is close to a scam. Do Not Use.

I put money into Upromise years ago for my stepdaughter and son. It was highly recommended and seemed fine. I recently went in to check on the accounts and it keeps saying my password is wrong and when I try to reset it the password it doesn't work. I have tried to contact Upromise by chat and phone and have had no response for days. I'm worried about the money in my accounts now. Does anyone know what the problem is?

I took out a Upromise card many many years ago and set up a 529 college account. We linked the 2 so cash back from the credit card went into the 529 account. We were able to get the 529 money to the universities where our kids attended (needed help from the 529 people but they were kind and helpful).
Barclays Bank bought the UPromise credit cards. NOW upromise and upromise.com are worthless. I wanted to close out my 529 account (successful) and UNLINK it from this credit card. But Upromise.com will not let me log in -- THERE IS NO UPROMISE CUSTOMER SERVICE ANY LONGER. No phone number and help emails say they will get back to you in 30 DAYS!
I spoke to Barclays and they cannot unlink the card and the 529 account. Going to have to cancel this credit card -- no choice since Upromise is no longer alive and well.
Dissapointing and disappointed.

You have been warned. Never again will I ever use this UPromise entity. Since October 5 2022 have been attempting to close my account and transfer the few remaining dollars to my linked bank checking account. In mid-November 2022 they confirmed all was set but as of today (January 4) the funds have not been transferred to me (as of February 13,2023). This follows several emails to customer service, i.e. December 21, November 21. The 800-customer service number is of no value. The recording lists website names. The option to select 0 for operator assistance is given but then you are told several times it is not valid. Just wanted people to be aware. Unfortunately I cannot give a rating lower than a 1 Star.

Verified purchase

Beware! They steal your money and don't actually transfer it to your 529. I've sent 6 tickets and 10 Facebook messages and still have no resolution 10 days later. According to their site, my transfers have been going through since 2020. And their phone number is a joke. They say to press 0 for an operator then it says invalid response.

We set up an account when our daughter was 1 year old. She is 19 and going to college this fall. We started inquiring about all the savings we had accumulated during this time for college. Well, no one seems to know anything about it now...nothing!

I have used upromise for many years and used it for my youngest college fund and was very happy. So happy that when she graduated in 2013 I transferred my earnings to my grandchildren. The new program required that a savings account be set up if there wasn't a 529 which they did not have. My daughter set up the savings account and I linked to it. She requested her upromise account worth Xnumber of dollars be transferred to the savings account, which it has not been. The website said I had a transfer that took place in December which has not shown up in the savings account. I tried to join the forum page but it would not recognize my email address which is linked to the account. Took me awhile to find a phone number as the new web page does not provide that information. I called and spoke to a representative who verified me thru my email which I told him the forum page would not; interesting. The representative did try to help me in the beginning but the transfer page search by date range was not working on my end; kept defaulting back to from 12/2018 to 12/2018. He kept saying his end worked fine indicating operator error. I expressed my disappointment in the new website and concern about future transfers being made. I primarily only shop where I can get upromise funds for my grandchildren. Not a happy user at this time.

Saving for college is too important to waste money and time on UPromise. The fees are outrageous, both the published and the hidden ones. Example of a hidden fee: if you log in after having not used the site in awhile, without asking it zaps your balance with a fee for "reactivation." Reputable financial firms do not behave this way. State-managed college savings programs don't behave this way either. Try one of them. Anything but UPromise.

If there was a "MINUS STARS" category, I would give this operation some. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to reach them only to be told after a half hour on the phone that no one was available and then they hung up! They have had my money for years and I am trying to get it transferred to no avail. BAD operation!

I've had password trouble since March and go round and round with a robot named
Hasniah (Upromise) or
Upromise Member Suppport (Upromise) or Compliance (Upromise)
With pretty much the same non results. The automatic password tells me it works then it doesn't. They requested I send my dirver's license, I'm not feeling good about that now. They have no live person to speak with. The only thing I can think of is they are in financial trouble. Something is wrong that is for sure.

As a result of my initial negative review (1 star), I got a response from management and later their customer service department. The problem has been rectified, and my rewards now post seamlessly to a checking account. I still give them only 4 stars because I initially was given short shrift by their customer service department and could not get to talk to a human.

Worse customer service EVER. I am not getting my Upromise Rewards. You buy stuff. You think you are going to get rewards. Rewards never materialize either on your student loans you've designated them to; to your Barclay's Card you've designated them to. It doesn't matter. Your REWARDS can be viewed in pretty charts on the Upromise website, but you can never claim them. Reminds me of an Eagle's song lyric. "You can check out any time you want, but you can never leave." The Upromise site and the Barclay's card site just bop you back and forth, but you get no info from either one. You will, I repeat, never get to talk to a human with this site and you won't get any rewards. At least, I didn't get any.

Have had a Upromise MC since 2005 and being young thought this was a good idea to save for my newborn's college. Now I am trying to claim my cash back/rewards. Linked my bank account...did everything... Any and all phone numbers are recordings that loop and hang-up on you. You will never speak to a human being. help.upromise.com (where the phone call sends you) sends you to their joke of a website - where there is no place to submit a question. An now my account has been frozen and I cannot log into it...

I have called Barclays as well - they cannot seem to get into contact with Upromise either, nor can anyone even tell me what my balance is - only the past year. I was told to go back through all my statements and add it up...If I could access the statements - I would. One would think the sum of your reward points would actually be on your statement.

Find someplace else to save for your child's education. It's a racket.

Upromise was fine for while my child was in college. But since graduation, I have wanted to have the 'rewards' money go into a different account. I made the changes online, and did not get the money. I called multiple times. I emailed numerous times. I filled out the upromise contact form. NO RESPONSE.

Signed up years ago earned over $300. Just left it sitting there till I wanted it. Then went to their site did all that was required of me to get money transferred 3 weeks before end of the month, they transfer the first week of the month. Transfer didn't go through and no response or an remedy to get situation fixed. Basically we are investigating why transfer didn't happen but not satisfaction, just wait till next month. In this age of being able to move money in seconds they can't do anything. Don't was your time folks nothing but a scam to hold the funds you earn as long as possible.

Best tip is do not waste your time. You can find plenty of rebate programs that are actually responsive and have solutions to customer issues.

I am unable to sign into my UPromise account that I held for decades. UPromise customer service claims they cannot find the account. They indicated that it may have been deactivated due to inactivity. They said my money would have gone to state treasury. My money is not there. I lost about $1800 in credits.
