“There are a few reasons why you might not have switched...”

Chris O.
5/30/10

There are a few reasons why you might not have switched to Windows 7 yet, perhaps the most likely being that the expense makes it more sensible to just wait and buy your next PC with it already installed. But you may also feel that you're content with Windows XP, especially since you've installed a million Windows Updates over the years and you reckon Microsoft must have got most of the bugs out of it by now. As operating systems go, it's not that bad. Good enough, anyway, to have no reason to change as long as it works for you. When it doesn't work for you, you might go looking for explanations at Microsoft's own support site, but frankly it's huge and disorganized with missing pages and confusing navigation. You may be much better off using one of the many independent support sites, and this is one of them. Don't be put off by the quaintly spelled name, or by the 1990s-style design. There's a great deal of content here: more than 800 tweaks on just one page, to start with, and a huge A-Z of Windows XP knowledge. The author is a Microsoft Most Valued Professional, too, which means there's more than a fair chance that he knows his stuff. Just one warning: this is one of the more technical sites and to get the most out of it you'll need to be sure what you're doing. Downloading and executing a script which modifies the Windows Registry, for example, is perfectly safe if you do it correctly, and for the right reason, and you back your Registry up beforehand. Nobody ever bothers to do that, naturally, which means that if you screw up, you may never get your operating system back. If you're told to "go to start/run/regedit" and you have no idea what that means, you're better off looking for a gentler help forum where someone can offer some hand-holding as you resolve a problem. Otherwise, have a nose around here and you'll almost certainly learn something you didn't know before.
