Very nice, safe and discrete packages. Fast shipping. Prices are not above average. Often make discounts and promos. But what is disappointing me is their attitude towards adult items. Jlist promote themselves over the web as genuine, native Japanese store, but many of adult toys are made in China! And this may be written on the product page or may be not! Why should I pay double price for Chinese items when they can be bought somewhere x2 cheaper? That is very strange and poor decision for the store pretending to be the website for the Japan lovers. Misleading.

JLIST- Is Bullsh*t. Yea they got some good stuff on there website, but their "CSR" are ignorant, and never respond to you, they also take 1-2 weeks to process you're damn order. I heard the "Owner" Peter Payne is a stuck up snob, and he if does not like where you live, USA etc, he will hold your orders for a long time. BEWARE!

I am a bit concerned right now, since they said their gateway failed on two different cards.
Their support is just an FAQ, so non-existent. How can you be profitable if you can't actually take any orders? If this is a scam company they won't last past the first attempt to charge my cards.

I've purchased from J-List a few times. I'm completely happy with their service. It came on time, and was exactly what I had ordered.

I don't understand why I am trolled/attacked by 4chan when ever I post there. When I question it, I cannot get a reasonable answer, just more hate attacks. I have tried twice, read rules and stickies, but it seems none of these apply to mods or the bigots that control this site. I have collected PDF conversions of the threads as evidence before they were manually deleted by mods so that my browser could no longer access them. Why me? I have been told that if I am not neo-Nazi supremacy I cannot use 4chan. This attitude is reflected across all 4chan, no matter what board you post on. /pol/ is recruiting terrorists and promoting religious/cultural hate through its memes, and false claim that it owns copywriter/trade mark on memes. It is deliberately radicalising young people into spreading these cultural and religious messages of hate. My recent experience there has been so horrible, that I want to report this site to counter-terrorist organisations. I can't believe that in this day and age something like 4chan is allowed to exist.

My oder from J-list was shipped, but Tokyo post returned it to sender. Now they say they have to wait till my order has returnes to their warehouse before they can shipp it again.

My question: HOW LONG does it take for one LITTLE pakacge to move - Inside Japan - from a place to another place -inside Japan.? It's been a MONTH.

I'm getting fed up. Next I'll ask to refund my money since they don't seem to care of my order, and if that is no no for them, I'll raise a disput via PayPal.

I DO NOT recommend this $#*!ty cheating service to anyone!

Tip for consumers:
BEWARE.
And do pay ONLY via PayPal,that way you MIGHT get your money back.

Unlike regular stores, J-List doesn't list when an item is out of stock on their website. It's really a hit and miss. They tell you AFTER you placed your order they no longer have it, mostly likely after you've paid. Communication is poor, and shipping is really screwed up. I've had wrong items shipped to my house, and really delayed shipping. You're better off looking at other sites like ebay or using proxy buyers, it'd probably be cheaper too.

I love this site, as the owner himself is a big anime fan. He can relate to his customers and give them amazing experience. He's actually went above and beyond for an order that was simply a mistake, I was sent the same figure when I needed two separate ones. He had responded to my email right away and got his staff to email me to correct my order. I will never forget the amazing experience I've had with this online store. Where can you find an online store that has special items that you can only find in Japan.

This website is just terrible. I ordered a figma figure from them last October and didn't hear from them until late February. "it takes 4-6 weeks" I hear you cry. But that was not the problem. I was expecting a generic "you weren't home, so it's in your local post office" message. This is where $#*! hit the fan. They said they could not find my home address and is currently sitting in some warehouse in California until I fix my address. Well, after looking at my info and double checking, the address was/is fine and should be located (fed ex and ups find me just fine). I send them a reply stating the address is correct and the order should be sent. I did not receive a reply shortly and thought that they were on top of things. HUGE MISTAKE, instead what follows is the bane of my existence. Every single month now I receive an automated message stating I never replied to them and should contact them immediately. Yet it always states the same amount of time. So they're receiving my messages, ignore them and send me another message doing the same song and dance. I will never recommend this place to my friends and I hope no one shops there again so they don't get ripped off as bad as I did.

I have been a subscriber to the jlist newsletter for years, and was a customer before, so when I was planning my family's vacation to Japan and I saw that jlist fulfilled Ghibli Museum tickets, I didn't hesitate to order with them. First, I ordered the tickets and paid $80 for four. The next day I got an email asking for a time of entry. I provided it the same day. Two days later I got a reply saying those times were unavailable. I replied with new times and said "please do not mail the tickets to USA at this point" as they would not arrive in time for the trip. I heard nothing for three days. Finally I emailed asking for an update. Nothing for two more days. A week after I placed my order I got a reply saying the tickets had already been mailed. They arrived too late and I spent $80 for nothing. When I arrived home I saw the post date on the envelope and it was three days AFTER I sent the email instructing them not to mail the tickets to the US -- the same day they sent me the email saying they had "already been mailed". This is fraud. I am extremely disappointed in jlist and am looking into how they can be reported to a business authority in Japan.

Currently in a dispute with jlist about some preorders. I placed two orders with them the first containing three item and two in the second order. I received the first order four weeks ago but it was missing one of my items, and I wasn't notified and even further the order claims to be complete. When I opened a ticket to ask about my missing item they said the item would be shipped when it was restocked. Okay I thought, I can wait a few weeks, which I did. I emailed them again a week ago to ask when I would receive my missing item and they said they wouldn't restock until July! I still haven't heard back from my demand for a refund. In addition my second order apparently was not charged when I made the purchase three months ago and they're trying to charge the card now, which is expired. They still haven't even responded to that ticket either, which you would think they'd be on top of so that they could get their money. Definitely not completing that transaction now. I know that jlist has a lot of cool stuff, but if you can get it somewhere else then do it.

I ordered a magazine subscription for Animedia Magazine on October 13th 2013 for $12 and I paid $16 extra for EMS Express Shipping (3-5 days). Total is $28. I get the confirmation email with my invoice details, etc. It's now November 7th and I don't have my magazine, tracking information, or any confirmation that it's been shipped or processed. I go on the website and check to see what's going on and there is absolutely NO information whatsoever about my order.

I've contacted J-List representatives by email (because there is no customer service number.) several (and I mean SEVERAL) times, but they keep telling me that my subscription starts in November. Uhh yeah okay.

So this guy named Nicholas emails me after I demand that my November issue of Animedia be shipped and that I be given tracking information (There is one in stock on the website. Or so it says). He tells me that he can get me the October issue and I clearly told him that I wanted the November one. I'd be fine with the October issue, but now that it's November I want to keep up with the new anime. Anyways, he emails back and told me that my card was declined. Why was he trying to charge me? I already paid $28 on the 13th of October. Does this money just get wasted? Basically they wanted me to pay $28 for nothing, and then another $28 for the actual magazine to be shipped. My next billing cycle is November 13th and I will NOT be renewing my subscription if this is how they work (which seems that it is based on other customer reviews).

J-List "You've got an enemy in Japan" is more like it.

You take your chances with Jlist.

Lots of great items, many out of stock. They won't tell you this. They just say it shipped and then, if you complain enough, refund your purchase price but not your shipping. Or they'll say that YOU left off your own streen name and ask for additional shipping.

I had read a lot of negative reviews about jlist, moreso on other sites than here, so I only made a relatively small order to see what my experience was like before committing to a larger stash of all of those fantastic goodies they've got on there.
So, I purchased:
A bento box
An absolutely adorable bag for that bento box
Some cute cup things to go in it
And
Their Popin' Cookin' Gummy Sushi Set (how could I resist?)
I think all of these things were reported as "in stock in Japan," but I think that perhaps the Popin' Sushi one wasn't. But anyhow...

It took about a week for my order to ship, which would make sense if they were waiting for my one item to come in as my instructions were to wait until all of my items had arrived before shipping rather than ship in separate orders. Then, two weeks later, the items arrived at my doorstep. I was away at college, so wanted to wait until I had seen everything before reviewing, but I've looked everything over and it's all just fine, and just what I wanted!

I used the cheapest shipping method, as well, so I wouldn't have been at all surprised if my items took me 3-4 weeks to get to me after shipping a bit late. But nope, the whole transaction took about 3 weeks total, which, all things considered (namely the fact that international shipping ALWAYS takes longer unless you're one of those people that does all they can with their mailing choices to make it super-express) is okay with me. I now have an adorable start to my bento box hobby!

So, I never had the need to contact customer service, so I can't say anything about that. But the fact that I didn't need to is pretty great too. I'll definitely be going there again if I can't find the bento stuff I need at a more local place, or just in general if I want some cool bits of Japanese culture in my life!

TLDR: Ordered snacks and a figurine with 1 month leeway. Shipment made with Japan Post (with tracking), arrived in 16 days. Went through customs, nothing tampered with, decent packaging. Overpriced items that can be found cheaper elsewhere.

This was my first time buying from Jlist, as I had seen many adverts previously for the site, and wanted to try them out.

I ordered 5 types of snacks and a little figurine for my sisters birthday, from reading other reviews I expected shipment to take at least a months time to arrive. SO I completed my order 1 month before I would need them to arrive (for her birthday).

For my shipment I chose the cheapest shipment available that had tracking ($7.54/£4.99). I was very impressed with the speed at which the package arrived (16 days). This is about the same speed at which packages shipped from Amazon.com take to arrive (to the UK).

There where no problems with the package, was decent, nothing exceptional. Had some small inflated bubble wrapping to keep things from breaking. Package had been opened when it went through customs, but nothing seemed tampered with or in ill condition.

The overall pricing of items seemed somewhat over the top, as I know I can find some of the items 20% cheaper on Ebay (mostly figurines). If it wasn't for the high pricing of some products I would probably give a 5 star review.

Tip for consumers:
If you live in Europe (the UK, e.g.) order items from Japan, they arrive quicker than from the US, and shipping is a LOT cheaper (by 10-20 $).

Japan Post w/Tracking recommended.

I ordered a "popin' cookin" and they said it would take from 4 days to 4 weeks. I was okay with that since its coming from Japan. But, what I didn't get was why the shipping was so high. The "popin' cookin" cost 5.80$ and the shipping cost 5.00$ at first I was thinking "they must be crazy" then I started thinking because of where it's coming from this might be the reason. So I ordered it. For some reason I waited 2 weeks to actually check out this website to see if it was what it seemed. Uh, when I say I wished I'd looked it up before buying from them I mean it. I've seen a ton of people complaining about how horrible their customer service is and how they lie about what they have instock, and the shipping fees. When I seen the part about shipping fees I felt like slapping myself because I knew. It just doesn't make sense to make someone pay for something that only cost 5.80$ then the shipping be 5.00$ too. Then I went on another site which sold the same thing and the shipping fees were COMPLETELY different. I'm annoyed, I actually thought this was a site I could order from regulary. From the look of the site and the products they sell, they seem legit. I guess the old say "things aren't always what they seem" fits perfect for this site.

On August 30 I placed an order for two books that were displayed as being in stock. After confirming the order I was told that they were actually on back order and I would have to wait until they came in.

The ended up shipping on October 11. It is now exactly 4 weeks since my order shipped and it has not arrived yet. My address is correct and I have also been to my local post office to see if it has mistakenly been dispatched there.

I have been in contact with J-List who have not been helpful at all. All I have been told is if my order ends up back with them they will get in touch with me. I am never going to place an order with this site again.

This site is pretty good. They have many good items that you can get from japan. I have ordered items from there a couple of times. I like their idea of j-list points where you can save up enough points and get discounts. They also have many good anime and adult stuff there too. But sometimes the shipping rates can be a bit above average. Overall this is a good sites to buys stuff.

Peter Payne has been running the jlist.com and jbox.com sites for about fourteen years now, so the name is well established in the West. Or at least on the West Coast, as the company has a branch office in San Diego, down in southern California. But the heart of the business is in Japan and it caters for anyone with a love of Japanese pop culture, an interest in Japanese traditions, or a need to educate themselves in the language and customs of the Japanese. The "j-list" version of the site contains a lot of adult material including Hentai and Bishojo material, of which more in a moment. But there is also a filtered, family-friendly PG rated version of the j-list site at www.jbox.com and that's where you should be heading if you're reading this review and you're under 18. http://www.jlist.com has an over-18 notice on the homepage and offers you the choice of visiting http://www.jbox.com instead. You choose.

Jlist's main appeal - aside from the adult material - is to westerners who love collecting those small examples of modern Japanese culture that amuse, amaze or confuse us folks over here in the civilized world. Such as black chewing gum, for example. And there's a comprehensive range of Mimikaki, or traditional ear cleaners, to satisfy anyone's desire to emulate the frequent ear-cleaning that the Japanese are apparently obsessed with. There's a wide range of Tees, including a very Japanese "Expel the Foreign Barbarians" shirt (not sure where in the USA you'd want to wear that one) and another with the characters for "Now accepting applications for a Japanese girlfriend". Cosplay outfits abound. There's a pretty good selection of Japanese snacks, sweets and candies, traditional Japanese items, calendars, magazines, and of course Manga, now highly popular with us western otaku (fans, and more than fans. The translation is insufficient).

All of this would make j-list worth a visit, and makes j-box worth a visit if you aren't in the market for the more adult Japanese interests. If you are, there is Hentai, or adult pornographic anime (animated movies) here, there are adult calendars and magazines, and plenty of adult manga (cartoon books) as well. The site does make very clear that it will not display or distribute any images that are intended or appear to be of under-18's. And although there's no legal obligation for the site to say so (Japanese law doesn't ban the use of under-18 characters), that's good, and right, even if it might confound the large section of the Japanese porn market that revolves around pubescent schoolgirls. In fact most Japanese manga and anime porn, which we call "Hentai" in the west, does revolve around or feature schoolgirls, even if they are claimed to be 18 or over. Come to think of it, you'd be hard pressed to find anything Japanese, porn or otherwise, that doesn't feature at least one incident with a female of indeterminate age dressed as a schoolgirl.

But a drawing is a drawing, and frankly there's not going to be a huge difference between a drawing of a 16- or 17-year old and a drawing of an 18-year old, or of a 20-year old dressed as an 18-year old. So please, be aware that regardless of any well-meaning assurances, there may be images in the adult manga section that you could easily believe to be a sort of kiddie porn even if they aren't. But this is not a porn site by any means, it's not shadowy or distasteful and the adult material is only a part of a much wider and more interesting range. One man's porn is another man's People looking for the hard stuff currently have about ten million other websites which will fulfil their more specialized needs, they aren't going to be around here.

The site is also known for its selection of dating-sim games, a type of Japanese computer game that really doesn't have any equivalent in the West. The player finds himself in a series of situations in which he has to choose the right responses, in order to complete a quest, win the hand of a heroine or, in the more erotic games, achieve something less romantic and more physical. At least I think that's about right, I've never played one myself. And western translations of the Japanese experience tend to leave something wanting. But the Japanese seem to love the concept and it has lately branched off to produce BL games, also known as yaoi, which I'll leave you to find out about for yourselves, and a variation for girls which features bishōnen, attractive but androgynous boys.

To wind up, there are further categories of items which include bento equipment and Japanese accessories for iPods and MP3 players from the ELECOM company. If you sign up for the free newsletter it arrives regularly in your inbox with some interesting tales of life in Japan, often worth a read, and it keeps you up to date on what's new, and what's in or out of stock.

I'm sorry for the lengthy review but being a Japanese-focused site there are some foreign concepts and language that need to be explained. I haven't got all you need to know in here, so I recommend using a source such as Wikipedia to research anything you find on the j-list site that isn't clearly explained.

I'm fortunate in happening to live close by a huge Japanese supermarket and a Japanese bookstore, and a couple of miles in the other direction I have Japanese household goods and novelties, more stores and food too. So I'm pretty well covered for things Japanese. Even so, there are many items stocked by j-list that I can't buy here. For most people, your visit to j-list will be the first time you've seen items like this and it'll be the only way for you to get them, so if you're otaku, or otherwise hooked on things Japanese, this is a resource that you're going to bookmark and return to.

You may like to research these terms at your own risk: otaku, cosplay, hentai (and "H games"), bishōjo, eroge, yaoi, bento.

Oh, and buy Pocky. Everyone loves Pocky.

I have ordered twice from J-list. On the first occasion, one item out of the shipment was missing and (without notifying me) replaced in the shipping box with a completely different (and enigmatic) food product. I never could figure out what the hell that thing was. What was especially bad was that I was not forewarned or simply notified then refunded for that one missing item. On the second occasion, five items were missing from the shipment. Adding to that, the missing items were no longer listed on their website. Even further, one food item received had expired before I had even placed the order, and J-list did not respond to my concerns regarding that. Great looking website. Abysmal customer service. EFFECTIVELY, THEY JUST DON'T CARE.
