“This website uses false job offerings on craigslist...”

Tom G.
8/11/10

This website uses false job offerings on craigslist where a company offers you a job and states that they require you to sign up and order a credit report for verification of your job offer. Just like nationalreport.net. There was a job offer to work for Hurely and an acceptance email from the director of human resources. When i called Hurely to confirm the name of the director she informed me that it was a scam.

HORRIBLE SCAM! It should be illegal for a website to post on Craigslist that they have a job, and then send people to this site telling them to do a credit report first. I wonder how many people actually fall for this.

I received this email;

Dear Applicant,

Thanks for your reply. Your next step in this hiring process is to complete our new employee questionnaire.
Job requirements: Outstanding written/oral communication skills in order to perform duties including responding to phones and taking messages, the preparation of mailings, the order and maintenance of supply amounts, elementary copying, common filing and emailing, and a basic knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Please note that our company requires all potential employees to have a credit score on file for your interview. We ask for this because you will have access to company credit cards for business expenses. We request that each potential employee complete this as this ensures us that our future employee is credible, trustworthy and can be an asset of the company.

Please also note that because of the recent economy we take in to consideration that there may be some blemishes on a large portion of applicant scores. Rest assured that your credit scores itself isn't very important, but the report is still required by our company.

Please complete and print your credit score by clicking
http://niestaassociate.com/official.free.credit.report/id1

You will need to bring a copy with you to your interview. This credit score costs you nothing and is completely secure from the most trusted credit score website online.

Please complete this first step ASAP as we only have 48 hours to set up interviews. When you have completed the credit score reply to this email and we will set a time for an interview.

I look forward to meeting with you.

Thank you

I applied to a job on craigslist. I received an e-mail with the following response:

Greetings:

Thanks for replying to our administrative assistant position posted on Craigslist and for taking the time to send in your resume. I am the Outside Placement Coordinator for our firm. From the many responses we received, you have been chosen for further consideration. I have reviewed your resume and I feel that your experience and demeanor would serve you well in this position should you be chosen. This is a full time position with the law firm, we have simply been contracted to find suitable candidates for them to interview so that they can remain confidential in the process.

I would like to schedule an interview with you as soon as possible. They will be conducting interviews within the next 3 to 4 business days (starting tommorrow). Please note that our company requires all potential employees to have a credit score on file for your interview. We request that each likely employee complete this as this ensures us that our future employee is credible, trustworthy and can be an asset of the company.

Please also note that because of the recent economy we take in to consideration that there may be some blemishes on a large portion of applicant scores. Rest assured that our hiring will not be dependent strictly on a per score basis.

Please complete and print your credit report from this link: http://ncr-credit.com/applicant*******/. You will need to bring a copy with you to your interview. This credit report costs you nothing and is completely secure from the most trusted credit report website online.

Please complete this first step ASAP as we only have 48 hours to set up interviews. When you have completed the credit score reply to this email and we will set a time for an interview. You will be interviewing with William Bennis, the Senior partner of their Mergers and Acquisitions department.

Congratulations on becoming a candidate, and best of luck on your interview!

I look forward to hearing from you.

Jessica Schultz
Outside Placement Coordinator
Spherion-Inc

After reading her e-mail, Some red flags came up in my head. I did my investigation to verify if this was legit. After contacting the actual Spherion headquarter, I was advised that this is a scam & Jessica is not their employee.

So I responded to her with the following:

Jessica Schultz,

After doing a thorough investigation, I have come to the conclusion that you are tricking people with this job posting. Your entire proposition is a scam. Beware, I have forwarded your information to the local authorities and I have reported your criminal activity to various outlets.

Stop using people's vulnerability online. You are not the smartest con, and all your tracks will be exposed eventually.

After seeing an online job ad on Craigslist, I responded with a cover letter and resume.

Immediately afterward, I received an e-mail advising I was chosen for immediate hire but needed to provide a copy of my credit report by registering for a "free" copy of my credit report at a service whose link was provided.

The link for the "free" credit report is as follows:

http://www.nationalcreditreport.com/index.cfm/offer_scipV3/affID/1144-1327/SubIDs/*******::::

However, the terms of the "free" credit report state a person is automatically billed after 7 days if one does not call to cancel the trial subscription.

What is frequently done in similar circumstances is nobody answers the phone at the number to be called for cancellation or the staff denies having received a cancellation notice and the subscriber is billed for a subscription.

To confirm whether my suspicions were accurate, I did an Internet search using the e-mail address of the response and got confirmation the ad and response were fraudulent (see comments at http://www.sitejabber.com/reviews/www.freescoresdirect.com).
