I have learned a huge amount on this site - esp. about breeding. I haven't bred a litter yet - but I feel much much better prepared having read so much great advice from very experienced breeders.
The site is fairly robust - so if you think it's OK to whelp $#*!es outside or to mate dogs without the appropriate forethought and health checks then this is not the site for you.
Of all the dog sites I frequent - this one is the best.
Champdogs is good website. The owner does a very worthwhile job. People would be better spending their time having a go at the disgusting sites like e....z!!
The forum can sometimes suffer from one or two people being a little overbearing,
however, every comment made by regular contributors has the best interests f dogs at heart. It is a well run and valuable forum.
If you have a genuine interest in dogs and their wellbeing, especially when it comes to responsible breeding, this is the best site on the Net. If you're a puppy farmer or think breeding puppies is something to do "because it would be fun for the kiddies" then you'll find your ideas strenuously challenged!
It seems champdogs like to make there own rules up as they go a long, and don't seem to apply them to all there members, that can make you feel victimised, then when challenged they do not repsond to your questions. I would not waste any more of my money on them.
www.champdogs.co.uk/html/conditions.html - Applied consistently to all members.
"I would not waste any more of my money on them" - You broke our rules, you no longer have the opportunity to.
Champdogs are an organization who have no authority and no mandate from the Kennel Club or any other breed club and yet they seem to think they can dictate to people on the ethics of good breeding.
given it's a site which 'advertises' puppies, stud dogs etc then they should have 'standards' - which they do, which is hardly the same as 'dictating' .. people have a choice of whether or not to use it, the site owners are ethical and have high standards, which is fair enough :-)
Except their "high Standards" are not applied to everyone. I can name at least one breeder on there that has bred a $#*! at 15 month (which against their rules) and even made up a pedigree which is clearly false and yet she (and the $#*!) is still listed on Champdogs.
No problem in breeding a dog under 2 years as long as the litter isn't advertised on champdogs as long as it's not against the breed club rules.... if you feel there's a problem just let them know and they'll investigate, rather than merely making remarks on here..... it's doubtful that every pedigree and dob is checked but let them know....
The litter does not have to be listed on Champdogs for a breeder to fall foul of the rules of champdogs. The breeder merely has to have bred a dog under the age of 24 months. They check with the Kennel Club Breed Supplement which of course does not have a 24 month rule. With the Kennel Club it is 12 months. I only found out it was a problem for Champdogs when they kicked my wife off the site with initially no explanation. They then said it was also because there was only 11 months between the litters being born. Where did that rule come from? My wife was extremely upset as she has never had anyone from Champdogs tell her she was in breach of their "rules" and did not know she had been kicked of until someone phoned asking where her details had gone. Oh... and they waited until her membership was due for renewal despite the fact the the "crime" took place several years earlier. So they took several years payments before telling her she was not welcome.
There are a few helpful friendly members on the forums but the majority have very strongly held beliefs that only show or working dogs should be bred from and will slate any other breeder who has only considered health tests and resulting excellent scores and temperament. Often the tone is condescending and sometimes aggressive towards those that do not believe as they do. It is against the rules to mention your breed if it is known you have a litter on the ground or expected as this is seen as advertising even if it related to your question and the reason they protect the site from this 'free advertising' as they charge to advertise on the site and so are protecting their financial sources. I would not recomment this site to anyone unless you show or work your breed as it is not friendly towards anyone else.
Oh and the site administrators and some members will be along to argue my points as they can't accept anyone has a different opinion to them as that is not allowed. Threads where you disagree with moderators opinions get locked.
I joined this forum some years ago now and have found it to be excellent. Most contributors share their knowledge and opinions and are very clear as to which is which. The expertise offered freely to help others improve their care of dogs is unmatched anywhere else--a big thanks to them all and the admin staff.
Excellent website. There are many experienced dog people on this site. People come on to ask questions about everything from behaviourable problems to feeding and whelping and health. I have learnt a lot and it is good that when you do have a problem or concern there is often someone that has been through the same problem and can give either advice or support. Admin do a great job but there is always someone that can slip through the net.
just got jrt from shelter. age unknown not barked since we got her. was living in a shed. VERYpossesive about my husband also her dog bed. any advise please
They have a set of rules that fall outside the rules laid down by the kennel club and they also do not apply these rules to all their members it seems
They have been quite personal and cutting with a friend breeder and asked her to give them information that wasnt even connected with her membership
We make no apology that our rules and regulations are more stringent than the Kennel Club. You may like to know that our rule which your "friend" fell foul of has now been adopted by the kennel club.
"$#*!es will not produce more than 4 litters in total"

@agree with Mark
stringent rules mean people can contact members with confidence that efforts have been made for breeders to be reputable... which can only be a good thing!
We often hear of complaints about the KC and Champdogs have added extra criteria which is surely a positive. Members know that everyone has to apply the same standards and puppy buyers can buy with confidence. Of course, there are people who may have slipped through the net and not picked up but Admin are always happy to help and are not afraid of expelling people.
Yes, the forum can get a bit heated but that can make for a good discussion, we all have opinions and this is a good place to voice them - but not get rude in response.
Keep up the excellent work,
