Agree with previous reviewer that bedandbreakfast.com reviews are of questionable reliability. I would not use this site alone but check other travel sites first to make sure things jive. There have been reports on Trip Advisor of properties with glowing reviews on bedandbreakfast.com but not so positive reviews elsewhere, and of course it was the latter that turned out more accurate.
As mentioned by the other reviewer, they don't seem screen positive reviews...a look at a couple of random properties shows several one- or two-liner 4 and 5 star reviews but no reviews with under 4 stars. Hmm... On the other hand, if you rate anything under 3 stars on any aspect, you get an e-mail, "Please supply us proof of stay in the form of your accommodation receipt or documentation of your payment to the property". The fact of the matter is, most people when confronted by the extra requirement -- and potential invasion of privacy that this represents -- would probably back out.
I don't know that I believe that false positive reviews don't happen...see Yelp and their decision to apply filters that apply to both positive AND negative reviews. It does seem suspicious that bedandbreakfast.com filters only negative reviews. Then again, since bedandbreakfast.com has a certain financial stake in selling gift certificates that can be applied to some properties listed on their site, it DOES make sense they would promote positive reviews and discourage negative reviews, though. Again, hmm....
After staying at a B&B listed on this web site I wanted to write a bad review. This site listed great things about the B&B we stayed in but in no way could they be possible. Other revie sites had a mixed review but Bedandbreakfast.com had nothing but good things to say.So get this......
If you write a good revew on bedandbreakfast.com the review gets posted without delay. If you write a bad review the review gets held up until you scan or fax and send documentation that you really stayed somewhere. Now I understand verification. Why do you think they make it harder on some but not others? Is this fair. Maybe the answer is in who pays for advertising on B&B.com. A review is a review and should be treated as equal when good or bad.
Use fair rules for everyone. This site is a real bad example
Q&A for Bedandbreakfast
Thank you for sharing your concerns about the BedandBreakfast.com reviews program. I'd like to take this opportunity to clarify a few issues in your comment.
Our reviews program was designed to be useful to potential guests and fair to innkeepers. When we launched the program in 2006, we needed to address the problem of false critical reviews; false positive reviews are rarely a problem.
We have multiple verification steps for both positive and critical reviews. The first is that all reviewers, both positive and critical, are required to verify their email address. We also have an internal validation system that checks each review for suspicious patterns (we do not rely on IP addresses). Every review on the site is read and posted by a Support department employee in our Austin office -- never a computer or automated system. Positive and mixed reviews are posted based on these verifications. Critical reviews have one additional verification step, wherein the guest supplies us with proof of their stay by email, fax, or mail.
This process ensures that the critical comments come from people who have actually experienced the property. Potential guests can trust that the negative reviews on BedandBreakfast.com are not from someone posting maliciously – they come from travelers who didn’t enjoy their stay, and who have taken the time to share their experience.
Both positive and critical reviews are posted on a daily basis. The reason why there are more positive reviews on the site is simple: we receive far more positive comments than negative. We encourage guests to write critical reviews; we also work with innkeepers to use the comments as constructive criticism.
Our complete reviews guidelines and FAQ are available here (it is also linked from the page where guests submit reviews):

We encourage any traveler with questions about our reviews program to contact our Support department directly. Our phone, email, and online chat contact information is available here:

As the leading online bed and breakfast directory, we feel it is necessary and appropriate to require verification for our reviews, as described above. We’re always happy to discuss and clarify our procedures with anyone who would like to speak with us.
