JetstreamHD is just the device I have been waiting for that allows you to view any media (movies, music, photos, etc) that you have stored on your hard drives at home to be view on your ipad anywhere you go. It connects to your router and then instantly finds the media. Instant access to your media without any upfront work is pretty much what we all want. I will admit I do not own this yet and it is still on pre order but the concept alone makes me give it a full heart and I will follow up with more details once I have this device at home. The main concern will be how you can find all of the media at home and how easy it is to search through it all.

Chris O. But look at what's happening right now. There's an immense political and commercial fight going on over 'internet neutrality' and so far, the providers and their supporters are the winners. They've succeeded in overturning the new rules forbidding them to interfere with web services, leaving them free to disrupt or close services they feel are competing or might compete with their own interests. VoIP has been mentioned specifically, because it competes with traditional telephone services, but what are they going to do with this idea you describe here? Streaming movies, music and other copyright content, thereby depriving TV and radio stations of advertising? I'm sure someone will find a reason to interfere with this.
But even if that doesn't happen, providers are already claiming that they really need to be capping existing usage because of bandwidth issues. What if everyone suddenly wants to stream their movies across the web at lunchtime?
Don't get me wrong, it's a good idea and it's only been waiting for the technology to make it viable. But I'll bet you that there's going to be heavy opposition from vested interests who realize at once that they aren't profiting from it and the more popular it becomes, the more they'll lose out.
Dawn T. I can't stand how apple and AT&T charge now for the gb you use per month. Things like this are great but you can't even use it if you are on the new ipad plans. Only the first people got the unlimited data plans.
Chris O. Agreed. I don't think there's a hope of things getting better, either, for various reasons, which take about three screens full of text to discuss and then get all political, so I'll leave it at "agreed".
Robert M. Why spend $199 for more hardware when you've already got a computer to do it for you? use the Air Video app. It's like $2.99. You download it once andthen for no additional charge you can add it to your iPhone(s) or additional iPads. The download of the server software for your computer is free. You point it to the folders where your media resides (and that can be a USB hard drive(s)) and there you go. Instant streaming media anywhere in the world. It does Live Conversion.
Rod G. thanks Robert, going to give that a try right now!
Ellis B. To continue the idea of spending less, try TVersity. It's a little more complex, but it streams and converts on the fly to more than iPads, it works with xbox, ps3, network media players, and the iPhone/iPad interface is through the web browser. Although I can imagine having a dedicated streaming hardware is good for power efficiency, and is probably a more ironed out solution, but the economy is to hell, so open source is a great alternative =)
