In honor of Marc Chagall’s birthday, this is where I spent my lunch break today.
Whether you are an art amateur or enthusiast, you can spend hours here and not notice. A very practical and comprehensive searchable database of 8000+ artists,
artcyclopedia.com scours and consolidates art content from a ton of online resources.
Browse by artist name (this works best), title, location, medium, nationality, or subject and technique to get biographies and links to museums and public galleries worldwide that have a particular artist’s works on display (with thumbnail images of the exhibition pieces), pictures from image archives, web sites about the artist, and links to relevant articles and books. Very impressive is the speed at which the images load.
You can also order from a handful of reproductions of an artist’s prints from
allposters.com. And, if you have a particular question about a piece of art or about an artist, check out the artconversation discussion forum. Very cool is their art news section (with regularly updated information on new museums, exhibition openings, etc.), features on a specific subject, and daily art history piece.
